Drilling Fluid Spill on 24/2/10

On Prime news of the 25th of February 2010 an announcement was made that Eastern Star Gas had had a drilling fluids spill at Molly Creek west of Narrabri on the 24th of February 2010.

Looks like Eastern Star Gas is at it again – another Environmental spill of Drilling Fluids containing Food Additives, Drilling Polymers, Fertiliser, Water and SALT. Yes folks that is correct. Eastern Star Gas, the darling of the NSW Government – not to mention the Narrabri Shire Council, along with various Government Departments, and Politicians and various recipients locally of Eastern Star Gases Community Consultation money, not to leave out the local Press – must now be shocked to learn that this so called squeaky clean Company, who, along with a Contractor has managed to pollute a local creek, MOLLY CREEK with the aforementioned Drilling Fluid. A clean-up is underway. As if that will remove all the chemical and other pollutants from the water table. THIS AREA IS THE SOUTHERN RECHARGE OF THE GREAT ARTESIAN BASIN, and Eastern Star Gas, despite all its words in all its REFs to the NSW Government Departments, has managed for the THIRD time since December 26th 2009 [see article 1] and the fourth known quantity spill since 2002, with a number of smaller documented spills, to pollute not only the surrounding countryside and the GAB, but the NAMOI RIVER. Irrigators should not worry about Government imposed water reductions because our own locally loved Gas Company will, if allowed by the various Regulatory Bodies, Local and State Governments, make the river water unsuitable for anything. Oh, yes you poor people down stream FOREGET IT! MOVE AWAY NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

In May I was able to find a number of Drill Sites by following a trail of Grey down the road. These trails gradually got wider and wider until eventually in October 2009 the owner of the site of Dewhurst 8 plucked up enough courage to inform Eastern Star Gas that it was well known to those watching Eastern Star Gas that the culprit was TRANSEARTH a locally owned and operated company. Well you could have knocked me down with a feather; they fixed both tankers. These trails went all through the State Forest, up and down the Newell Highway, in and out of the township of Narrabri, spreading its load of polluting Drilling Fluids as it went.

The owner of this company is the same person who, while standing in a puddle of Diesel at 1430hrs on a Saturday afternoon in October 2009, berating me for harassing his Drivers by videoing their wrong-doings, had the temerity to, when he was asked about the Diesel spill he was in said “What Diesel? Are you sure it’s Diesel?” The spill was then reported to Mr T. DONNAN of Eastern Star Gas, who was moving house in Sydney at the time so he informed me, he told them to clean it up. Mind you the spill was 17km long and had occurred at approx. 0600 that day.

Again DECC, Narrabri Shire Council and DII Maitland [Mr G. Summerhayes] were all informed. Only the Narrabri Shire Council GM and his party turned up on the Monday to have a look and to receive a DVD of the spill which was still in evidence both in smell and sight in many locations along Westport and Rockdale roads.

Despite all the evidence against Eastern Star Gas and their contractor, NO ACTION WAS EVER TAKEN AGAINST EITHER POLLUTERS. I wonder if it had anything to do with Eastern Star Gas’ Mr R. Sleeman making a public statement to the effect only 20Lts were spilt, and this, despite Mr T. Donnan telling me 30Lts. You be the judge – a spill 17km long, noticeable for 3 days and a puddle at least 6m by 3m, and for up to 3weeks you could still scrape the surface and find diesel. Enough of this story, that’s for a later date.

So let’s ask what’s going to happen over the current spill, probably the same that has happened before – NOTHING! Such is the fear of “nobody’s girl” of the power these Gas Companies appear to hold over those who make discussions that govern us ALL. I was once told we all put our pants on one leg at a time, hence we are all equal and the same. ARE WE?

I ask THE GREENS TO ASK THE MINISTER WHEN WILL THIS GOVERNMENT GROW MALE APPENDAGES AND START ASKING WHY THIS COMPANY CAN GET AWAY WITH WHAT IT DOES AND WHY IS THE DII [DPI] SOLE REGULATORY BODY FOR THE GAS EXTRACTION INDUSTRY IN ALL MATTERS UP UNTIL THE PRODUCTION STAGE?

All I have said here can be backed by letters, video tape, photographs and notes of phone calls.

Mr D Casey of Eastern Star Gas do you still stick by your state under Parliamentary Privilege as stated below or will you now recant?
”Eastern Star Gas takes exception to suggestions that it is not complying with licence conditions. Allegations of this nature have been and continue to be made by one Narrabri resident but, without exception, have been proven to be without foundation”
